| Etymology of specific epithet |
The species is named in honour of Prof. Max Poll (1908-1991) in recognition of his outstanding work on the freshwater fishes from Africa in general and from the Congo basin in particular; during his field trip on the Bushimaie River in 1956, Poll collected the two largest specimens of Distichodus polli, the smaller of which has been designated as the holotype (Ref. 122090).
